DragonWingsVR is a VR dragon flying game for Windows: take your place among the dragon riders at the Challenger Cliffs and compete in aerial speed trials, pin-point landings, an obstacle run, and fire-breathing combat courses. You fly with motion controllers or a gamepad, and the game also runs without VR equipment. It released on Steam in December 2016.
Built at Wyrmbyte in Unreal Engine 4. I did gameplay programming and focused on the VR controls, comfort, and locomotion: finding a fun, engaging way to give the feeling of guiding and flying on the back of a dragon while keeping VR sickness down.
What I worked on
- Did gameplay programming across the speed trials, landings, obstacle run, and combat courses
- Did UI programming for many of the in-game menus and screens
- Built the VR controls and dragon flight, iterating extensively on how guiding a dragon feels in VR, cutting motion sickness while keeping the sense of speed and presence
- Built the achievement system, covering in-game progress tracking and Steam achievement integration
- Handled the Steam release, builds and deployment
